Activities

Our Activities

Older Men Unlimited (OMU) organise many activities that allow for friendship and companionship, and with so many options, you are bound to find one that suits you.

OMU Main Activities

Man Drinking a Cup of Tea

Morning/Afternoon Teas

$5 donation appreciated

Every week OMU members get together in our club rooms. This regular catch up is very much looked forward to with a chance to chat with mates and have a bite to eat. Hervey Bay morning teas are held at Seagulls Rugby League Football Club and in Maryborough at the Airport. Transport can be arranged if required.

Monthly Meetings

$5 donation appreciated

Our main get together is held once a month with a large group coming together to enjoy each others company. Hervey Bay is on the 4th Monday of every month and Maryborough meets the 1st Tuesday. There is plenty to eat and drink and often we will have a guest speaker talking on an interesting topic. Please note there are no December meetings.

Outreach

Connecting

OMU began as a service to support isolated older men in our community. Our outreach is an important and rewarding way of connecting with older men who are not willing or able to get out and about within the community. Groups of our members regularly visit nursing homes to connect with older men, sharing stories, playing games and having a cuppa. This leads to strong friendships and positive outcomes for all involved.

Art Group

Get Creative

The art group is very popular with strong attendance and a growing interest from members. The group meets Wednesday morning from 8AM to 11AM at the Seagulls clubhouse in Hervey Bay.

Fishing

Trips away

The Fishing Group are constantly out and about at different fishing locations around the area, on either day excursions or sometimes multi-day trips. Join the group to get away from the everyday and enjoy some company while throwing in a line.

Walking Group

Get the blood flowing

Every doctor will tell you that exercise is vital to staying healthy. The walking group enjoy the sights of the Hervey Bay Esplanade. This is not an olympic event style walk, but a nice morning stroll soaking in the ocean breeze and chatting with mates along the way. If you're living in Hervey Bay this is one of the best ways of appreciating our area.

Fundraising

Community Involvement

While funds for our not for profit organisation come largely from Government Support, we also undertake a lot of fundraising to assist with the costs of activities. This keeps our membership and activity costs to a minimum and is a great way to raise awareness for our group within the community. Fundraising activities can be sausage sizzles or one of our famous raffles. OMU is very appreciative of the members who volunteer their time to help raise funds and awareness of our group. Every Saturday morning you will find OMU members at the Urangan Pier Markets having fun while cooking up a storm on the BBQ or selling raffle tickets. You will also see the men in the maroon shirts outside the Torquay Post Office every Thursday morning selling raffle tickets so keep an eye out for the maroon shirts and come and say g'day.

Special Events

Other get togethers

Our largest event each year is usually the Christmas Party. Throughout the year other opportunities to get together may include the Melbourne Cup, State of Origin, BBQ's, picnics or other outings that our members feel would be great to be a part of. OMU connects you to others with similar interests to create a social network that is not limited to just these activities.
